Mindfulness meditation has been proven to change epigenetic expression of genes related to inflammation – effectively reducing the likelihood of heart disease, chron’s disease, and a host of other inflammatory diseases.
A study published in the National Center for Biotechnology showed that “The regulation of HDACs and inflammatory pathways may represent some of the mechanisms underlying the therapeutic potential of mindfulness-based interventions.”
What this means is that meditation can change the expression of certain genes in your body. They can therefore be “turned off” or “turned on.” Genes related to inflammation were shown to be turned off, which means it is a potential treatment for inflammatory diseases like Rheumatoid Arthritis, Asthma, or Chron’s Disease.
Additionally, histone regulation was affected, and histones are linked to memory and learning.
So take 10-30 minutes a day and be mindful, meditate, find yourself in the present – because it’s good for your body and the mind it carries too.
